HRC Member Training & Hunting

While supporting your training we will ensure that you have all the training tools required to be successful as you prepare for your next hunt or hunt test. Granite Springs offers not only training sites, food & lodging but also the most up to date training equipment & Library which is provided by our HRC sponsers. Additonally, we have a staff Professional Trainer and veterinarian whom you may call during your stay for assistance.

Training Sites

Granite Springs has both upland an water sites within walking distance of the lodge and guide house. Please see pictures 2-4. Guests are not required to pay any additonal fees for there use. Additional ponds are in the process of being built. Sites in the surrounding community are avilable and we are currently in the process of working out long term agreements. Price if any for HRC or it's members have not been determined.

Training Equipment

Granite Springs provides everything a trainer requires to enjoy the day. The training library contains contains training publications and a database of hunt tests that can be used during your stay. All rates are for HRC members only.

Food

Please call for options regarding suppers and lunches. A contential breakfast will be avilable for all guests staying in the Lodge or Covey rooms.

In addition to our regular staff of five, we have a large number of bartenders, waitresses, servers, bird boys, drivers, photographers, maids and general help on call. This extended network ensures that we will have the staff in place to make your event run smoothly and worry free.

Lodging

Located fifteen minutes from Mitchell SD. Granite Springs boasts of modern and comfortable facilities combined with breathtaking views of a private 10-acre spring fed lake. The lake itself is over 100ft deep and surrounded by mature trees and walking paths. This and 12000 plus acres of hunting ground are combined with the lodge, which has 16 guest rooms, each with a private bath. There is also a main dining room, 3 bedroom guide house, kennel, 2 lounges, and two patios. Our facilities are ideal for formal or informal gatherings (i.e. meetings, classes, outdoor sporting events.

Professional Trainer

Shane Olean

Shane and Teri Jo have a comined 30 years of retriever training, handling and testing experence there isn't a lot they haven't seen. They've come to believe that the only way to finish a retriever is to teach and teach and teach then test. Also that the finest testing method for retrievers is the the Hunting Retriever Club (HRC) tests. Both Shane and Teri Jo actively judge and compete nation wide in regular and upland tests. Hunting

We understand the HRC members will want to hunt in there own group, with there own dogs. No Problem. Let Granite Springs take care of the food & lodging. Upon your arrival we'll show you grounds within a short drive of the lodge where you can hunt on your own. Both pheasant and waterfowl are avilable. License requirements for waterfowl are on a drawing basis and need to be applied for prior to mid July. Please check with the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks for the current info and reguations. The unit in which you'd be hunting at Granite Springs is NRW-00B. For upland / pheasants the license can be purchased on line or over the counter upon your arrival.

Pheasant Season opens the 3rd weekend of Oct and runs until 1st weekend in Janurary.
